What is Ketamine?

Originally used as a pediatric anesthetic, ketamine has shown to be an effective drug for fighting depression. Ketamine works differently in your brain than other antidepressant medications. Conventional antidepressants such as SSRIs have to build up in your system to change your brain chemistry. Ketamine almost immediately alters the neurotransmitter activity in your brain.

 

In low-doses, ketamine produces a surge in glutamate, which encourages the growth of the brain’s synapses. With this increase in glutamate, the neural connections in the regions of the brain that are affected by depression are stimulated, strengthened, restored. The brain circuit function is improved from these strengthened neurons that have previously been stifled by depression.

Each patient receives their Intramuscular Ketamine treatment in a private room with live stream video observation by our staff. We believe that the experience and the environment in which a patient receives their IM treatment plays a big part in how effective the treatment will be. Our patients comfort and privacy is very important to us

Ketamine has a very reassuring safety profile. There have been case reports of brief periods of apnea (no breathing) with a rapid push of a large amount of ketamine such as might be used to induce anesthesia in an operating room. With a low dose administration there is no respiratory depression. Our patients are responsive and able to talk throughout the Ketamine session. The most common side effect is mild nausea in some patients.
